This Week in The Cassell – Volleyball hosts ACC’s best before Late Night with the Hokies

     Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg updated the status of sophomore forward Cadarian Raines’ foot injury in the October Roundball Club update (via @hokieguru).  As it stands now, Cadarian is the only true post player left to back up starters Jeff Allen and Victor Davila.

     The third annual Late Night with the Hokies will be held this Friday in Cassell Coliseum, and it could turn out to be a very important night for the Hokies on the recruiting front.  Rev. Zeke Vodka on Tech Sideline reports that highly touted center Adjehi Baru will be making an official visit, along with 3 other Tech recruits.  Baru is the 3rd ranked center in the 2011 class according to Rivals and has narrowed his college choices down to VT, Maryland, UNC, and the College of Charleston.  Get a great seat for the show, and help pack the Cassell early to create a great atmosphere as the festivities start a 7pm with the volleyball match versus Wake Forest.

Last week:

         The Hokies traveled to College Park, MD on Friday night to take on the Maryland Terrapins.  Despite out-hitting and out-blocking the Terps, the Hokies fell 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 23-25).  Sophomore Morgan O’Neill moved to libero, where she tallied a game-high 19 digs, but as a team the Hokies committed too many errors to win on the road.  On Sunday afternoon, Tech bounced back against Boston College, earning a 3-0 victory on the Eagles home court.  Junior Justine Record led the Hokies with 11 kills and 8 digs, while fellow junior Erin Leaser recorded her 8th double-double of the season.  Tech held the BC to a .063 hitting percentage and out-blocked the Eagles 11-7.  Senior Felicia Willoughby’s 3 block assists made her the new all-time leader at Tech with 495 career total blocks.

Up next:

       Thursday night the Hokies will have a chance to pick up a quality win at home when they face league leading Duke in Cassell.  The Blue Devils are 15-2 and a perfect 7-0 in the ACC, standing at #9 in the latest RPI rankings.  Duke is led by 6’5” (yes, 6’5”) sophomore middle blocker Christiana Gray, who is hitting .377 on the season and averaging 0.91 blocks per set.  On Friday Tech hosts the 11-6 (4-3 ACC) Wake Forest Demon Deacons, where the Hokies will look to feed off of the extra-large crowd in Cassell before Late Night with the Hokies.  It should be an exciting two games inside Cassell as Tech has played it’s best against top competition, and this weekend should be no exception.
