This Week in The Cassell – Hudson and Bell talk College Gameday

Basketball

     Last week, Virginia Tech basketball took a big step in the right direction, being included in ESPN’s College Gameday lineup for the coming season for the first time ever.  Hokiesports.com has two new interviews posted with seniors Dorenzo Hudson and Terrell Bell, discussing their busy summers, what it means for them to be featured in College Gameday, and their impressions of the team so far. Volleyball

Last Week:

     The Hokies opened their season in the Comcast Lady Vol Classic with victories over Chattanooga (3-0) and Xavier (3-2).  Senior Felicia Willoughby, Junior Erin Leaser, and Sophomore Cara Baarendse shined in the opening two matches, with a combined .415 hitting percentage.  Tech fell 3-0 in the championship match to #19 Tennessee despite a match high 13 kills from sophomore Jennifer Wiker.  Despite the loss, overall the Hokies had a good showing for the weekend and there were some encouraging signs, including the play of freshman Samantha Gostling, who finished with 6 kills and two service aces against the Vols.

     Junior Erin Leaser was named the Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week for her performance over the weekend. She dished out her 2,500th career assist and needs only 415 more to move into the top five all-time in the Hokie record books.

Up next:

     This weekend the Hokies host the fifth annual Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational in Cassell Colliseum.  Tech will hold its home opener at 7 pm on Friday night against Coastal Carolina.  On Saturday, the Hokies will play host to Long Island at noon and Jacksonville State at 7 pm.  All three teams participated in last year’s NCAA tournament, with Jacksonville State advancing to the second round.
