Virginia Tech assistant coaches Aaron and Jolene Shepardson will be leaving the Hokies volleyball program after just one season in Blacksburg. For the past year, Jolene Shepardson has served as an assistant coach, while Aaron held the title of volunteer assistant coach. According to a hokiesports.com press release, their resignation took effect on March 5th. Jolene has been named interim head coach at California State University at Bakersfield, while her husband Aaron will serve as associate head coach. The Shepardsons will take over a UC Bakersfield program that finished the 2010 season 0-33 in their first season as a Division I program. It’s an excellent opportunity for them to build a program in a great recruiting territory.
Aaron and Jolene came to Virginia Tech last May from American University. During their time in Blacksburg, the Hokies had the most successful season in program history, winning 20 matches and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The official closing date for the open position is next Tuesday, March 22nd. Note that there will only be one coach hired for a paid position since Aaron was in a volunteer position.
