Wolff Takes Over As Women’s Head Coach

          Virginia Tech announced this afternoon that current Director of Men’s Basketball Operations Dennis Wolff will take over as the new Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball program.  Wolff has held his current position since last summer, before which he compiled a 247-197 record in 15 seasons as the coach of Boston University’s men’s program.  Wolff replaces Beth Dunkenberger, who stepped down last week after seven seasons at the helm.

     While Wolff does not have collegiate coaching experience in the women’s game, he brings a wealth of basketball knowledge into a program that has stumbled to a 27-71 record in the ACC over the past seven seasons.  Wolff does have experience recruiting in Virginia and ACC territory, having spent time as an assistant at Virginia and Wake Forest.  Wolff’s daughter Nicole was the 2002 McDonald’s National Player of the Year and played basketball under coach Geno Auriemma at Connecticut.

     The move to hire Dennis Wolff as the head women’s basketball coach keeps nearly 500 games of head coaching experience under the roof of the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Center.  Since the Director of Basketball Operations job is normally an entry-level position in collegiate coaching, it was unlikely that Tech could have retained Wolff at that position.  Men’s coach Seth Greenberg will begin his search for a new Director of Basketball Operations for the second straight season.
