The Hokies landed their first commitment for the Class of 2012 Sunday from North Carolina power forward Montrezl Harrell. Harrell is a 6’7” 235 lb forward, who chose the Hokies over ACC schools Clemson, Virginia, Miami, and Wake Forest, along with South Carolina and Xavier. Montrezl also received interest from Duke. The Hokies became the favorite for Harrell after he visited Blacksburg last weekend for the Virginia Tech-Duke game.

Harrell currently plays for North Edgecombe High School in Tarboro, NC and plays for the AAU team Carolina Elite. He averaged 16 points and 6.7 blocks last season. Montrezl’s commitment is a big one for Seth Greenberg, who is looking to to build some frontcourt depth with the 2012 Class. It's also another sign of how far the program has come and the effect of hosting an event like College GameDay. Just eight years ago grabbing recruits of this caliber from Tobacco Road's own backyard was, as some might say...certifiably insane. If his rankings stand, Harrell would be the highest ranked Virginia Tech recruit to come from outside Virginia.
