With the out-of-conference schedule largely over for most ACC teams, it’s time to take a look at how the ACC is shaping up so far this season. Teams are finishing up their second ACC game this week, yet we still know little about which teams will be serious contenders for NCAA bids over the next two months. Duke, the nation’s top ranked team, is clearly the cream of the crop. Wake Forest, on the other hand, has losses to Stetson, Winthrop, and Presbyterian (all at home) and is by far the league's worst team. The rest of the league is very much up for grabs.
| ACC Standings (as of 1/10) | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Team | Overall | ACC | RPI |
| Duke | 15-0 | 2-0 | 5 |
| Boston College | 12-4 | 2-0 | 40 |
| NC State | 11-4 | 1-0 | 106 |
| North Carolina | 11-4 | 1-0 | 21 |
| Clemson | 12-4 | 1-1 | 114 |
| Virginia Tech | 10-4 | 1-1 | 61 |
| Florida State | 11-5 | 1-1 | 82 |
| Virginia | 10-6 | 1-1 | 144 |
| Georgia Tech | 7-7 | 0-1 | 172 |
| Wake Forest | 7-9 | 0-1 | 253 |
| Miami | 11-5 | 0-2 | 33 |
| Maryland | 10-5 | 0-2 | 117 |
Boston College has had a positive start to the season under first year coach Steve Donahue, racing out to a 12-4 (2-0 ACC) record despite being picked to finish 10th in the standings. A young Virginia team recently took a big hit as senior forward Mike Scott was lost for the season due to an ankle injury. Miami sits strongly in the RPI at 33rd thanks to wins over West Virginia and Mississippi, but has dug itself into a 2 game hole after falling to Clemson and Duke. Several key games over the next couple weeks could go a long way to sorting out the standings.
