Top Hokie Recruits Getting National Attention

Basketball

          Norcom senior and future Hokie Dorian Finney-Smith has been turning more and more heads since signing with Virginia Tech back in November.  After leading I. C. Norcom High School to the 2010 Virginia AAA State Championship, Dorian (“Doe Doe”) now has his Portsmouth, VA team among the best in the nation.  The Greyhounds are currently 21-1 and ranked 7th in the nation by MaxPreps and 11th by USA TODAY.

     Dorian was recently upgraded to a 5-star prospect by ESPN and stands a chance of being the Hokies’ first McDonald’s All-American since Dell Curry, whose career scoring mark stands 2nd in Virginia Tech history.  ESPN ranks Finney-Smith as the #4 small forward and the 19th best player in the Class of 2011, while Scout and Rivals rank him at #26 and #37 overall, respectively.  In addition, Rivals rates Dorian as the best defender in the 2011 ACC recruiting class, and listed fellow Tech recruit C.J. Barksdale as having the best “motor” of the class.

     The entire 2011 class is ranked 11th in the nation by ESPN.  Both ESPN and Rivals rank the Hokies as having the 3rd best recruiting class in the ACC behind Duke and North Carolina.  In addition to C.J. Barksdale, who will look to fill Jeff Allen’s shoes, Tech will welcome point guard Marquis Rankin and wing Robert Brown, who has the potential to be a major sleeper.  Barksdale, Rankin, and Brown have led Hargrave Military Academy to an undefeated record so far this season.

Volleyball

     The praise has continued to pour in for future Hokie setter Jordan Fish.  The North Branch senior was named a finalist for two national awards: PrepVolleyball.com’s National Player of the Year and the Andi Collins award, which goes to the nation’s top setter.  Jordan won the title of Miss Volleyball 2010 in November, an honor given to the top player in the state of Michigan.  Previous winners of the award include Alisha Glass, who led Penn State to three consecutive national titles between 2008 and 2010.

     Jordan finished her high school career with a 285-20-3 record after guiding North Branch to consecutive state title matches in 2009 and 2010, taking home the championship in 2009.  A 2009 PrepVolleyball.com All-American, Jordan was named Under Armour Honorable Mention All-America and MaxPreps Third Team All-American following her senior season.
